I found this short film an interesting one to analyse because it makes the viewer think about the meaning of it, and different people will have different readings of it. The way I understand the film is that the narrator throughout the film is the man who we see driving the car and on the beach. The balloon represents his wife/partner (Katherine) that he is writing the letter too and how he has always wanted things to work out with her but when he tries to reach for the balloon/Katherine he cant quite reach it, which reflects his relationship as he has always wanted it to work but it just doesn't. Also as he continues the letter with 'Goodbye Katherine' the balloon moves further away from him which emphasises this.
When the balloon pops it represents the end of their relationship, and then the shocked look on his face as he reads his own letter to her represents him realising after he broke up with her that he made the wrong decision.
It is very hard to place this short film into a genre because of its short length and simplicity however it is based around romance and privacy. The narrative is very simple and easy to follow however allows the viewer to put their own take on the film which is quite hard to achieve but done well. Although I am not planning on making a short film similar to this one looking at it in detail has helped me as they use alot of good camera angles and other factors of mise-en-scene which I can use to help me.
